Thousand Cranes Shabu-Shabu Treat

Thousand Cranes Shabu-Shabu, Greenbelt 3, Makati City

My friends and I were taking the Chartered Business Administration Program at the Asian Institute of Management (AIM) and after our first day of class which ended up at around 12:30 PM, we decided to take our lunch at Greenbelt 3, Makati City. We walked around to check what type of food were offered in various restaurants at Greenbelt 3 until we finally decided to eat at the Thousand Cranes Shabu-Shabu Restaurant.

Thousand Cranes Shabu-Shabu serves healthy, fresh and sumptuous Japanese cuisines. It is famous for its Shabu-Shabu. Shabu-shabu is a Japanese hot pot meal. Its name literally translates to "swish swish," the noise that the meat makes as it is swirled through hot broth with chopsticks.

It is a cook it yourself meal.  You select the ingredients you want to eat and then put it into the boiling broth in the pot

First, a nabe is brought to the table and set up to heat. It is a special pot for the water or dashi broth that the diners use to cook the shabu-shabu. At the Thousand Cranes restaurant, the cast iron pot and the stove is already built into the table. A switch is also attached to the table so you can control the heat of the built-in stove and turn it on or off.

The Ingredients : fresh vegetables, thinly sliced meat, tofus, mushrooms, crab sticks, corns, eggs, crab, thick and thin noodles, squid, fish/squid balls

A closer look at the ingredients

The primary ingredient is thinly sliced meat, usually beef or pork and sometimes chicken, which is brought to the table raw for the diners to cook themselves in the nabe. Additionally, tofu and vegetables, such as Chinese cabbage, lotus root, and enokitake mushrooms are provided to cook in the broth. In our case, we added crab which is my favorite. We also have squid balls, crab stick, corn and egg.

The dish is frequently cooked at the table, and the diners can pick the cooked ingredients they want from the pot. It is either eaten with the broth or with a dip or sauce. Further ingredients can also be successively added to the pot.
